I am so thankful for the opportunity to lead the Worship Ministry of Heritage Baptist Church! This year is going to be an exciting year as God continues to bring people with amazing talent and hearts after God to our team–both on staff and as volunteers.

Last year, we began having the full orchestra one Sunday each month with an additional Sunday involving our string section. The orchestra continues to grow and we look forward to the continued growth of both the orchestra and the string section.

One of the most powerful elements of worship is a choir. The purpose of a choir is to give both a visual and audible example to the congregation of participating in worship. A choir is a powerful force! In 2 Chronicles 20:21, we read that the choir went in front of the army when Israel went out to war. The HBC Worship Choir continues to grow and includes a full age spectrum of adults.

We are also excited to engage our children in singing in partnership with our Kids Ministry. On a weekly basis, we have teams leading worship in three different age groups: Kindergarten through second grade, third and fourth grade, and in Team56 (grades five and six). We also have a team of people who lead our Preschoolers in worship once a month.

Our student worship ministry is also growing with middle and high school students participating in planning and leading monthly worship nights. During these Wednesday evening worship nights, our students are leading their peers in worship, prayer, and in the Scriptures.

With all of these worship environments occurring across the campus amongst all these different age groups, it has necessitated the growth of our technical production team. These are the volunteers who are often working behind the scenes to make sure the music is heard and the lyrics can be seen.

Something that I’ve become aware of over the last few months is that God is bringing many creatives to Heritage – people who write, arrange, and create music. When I did my research for my doctoral dissertation, I discovered that each church has its own unique worship culture. This explains why a song might resonate with one local body, but not with another. I wonder what it might look like to gather together these creatives to begin writing, arranging, and creating original music that reflects and resonates with our own unique worship culture?

As I look at 2026, I am excited that the worship ministry is pretty well “built out.” The systems and structures are in place to provide worship experiences for preschoolers through adults. I am excited that the HBC Worship Ministry is a family that enjoys serving together and we look forward to welcoming new people into our family. If you are interested in serving in the HBC Worship Ministry, send an email to music@hbclynchburg.com and we would be happy to connect you with a place to serve.
